Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA – in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. He does it for fun, for defiance, for beauty, and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where “the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys.”
Ron Finley grows a nourishing food culture in South Central L.A.’s food desert by planting the seeds and tools for healthy eating. He’s an artist who is choosing to make a difference, and he’s choosing the soil as his canvas. In his own words, “I am an artist, and gardening is my graffiti. Gardening is the most defiant act you can do in the inner city. Planting food is like planting money.”
Ron Finley is a very powerful voice, with a very powerful message, living in a place that sorely needs both. This 11-minute video depicts everything that is wrong with our system, and shows everything that is right and beautiful about people – people who step up and care. Ron Finley is such a person.
The food scene in South Central Los Angeles is abysmal, by anyone’s standards. It’s not acceptable and it should make us all feel angry and defiant. Yes, there is a bit of language in this video that may not be PG, but, if it’s the language that offends you, but not the reality of the situation… then you’re not ready for the kind of change that Ron Finley is presenting. Using our anger and passion is an important part of making change, and Mr. Finley is a beautiful example of how to intelligently, articulately, and powerfully use your passion and angst to make a difference.
A couple of lines that are as powerful as any words I have heard spoken in our industry from this video are:
“Food is the Problem, and Food is the Solution.”
“The funny thing about sustainability… you have to sustain it”.
Ron Finley is a beautiful man, with a powerful voice, in the right place at the right time. Please watch this video… and have a great day.
