What Leadership Looks Like

nelsonMandelaNelson Mandela died yesterday. He was 95 years old. Mr. Mandela was South Africa’s first black president and a tireless leader in the struggle against racial oppression known as apartheid.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of treason by the white minority government, only to then lead a peaceful end to white rule by negotiating with his captors after his release in 1990. He led the African National Congress, long a banned liberation movement, to a decisive electoral victory in 1994, the first fully democratic election in the country’s history.

I have written often on this blog about leadership, but words pale in comparison to actually witnessing what true leadership really looks like. Please take the time to watch the video below. It is a portion of Mr. Mandela’s speech following his release from prison. The first 5 minutes are simply the ovation he receives from the crowd. What you will witness is what a beloved man – how an effective leader is received. It is deeply moving and so well deserved. He not only changed the course of South African history… but he inspired so many people around the world to engage and fight for equality.

He was a beautiful man, and a tremendous leader. He will be missed… but forever remembered.
