Seriously… Have More Fun!

Most work environments do not promote creativity or play. Those are attributes that are part of your personal life, but not work – that’s for serious people with serious ideas. I say this tongue-in-cheek, and yet I fear that if I did not actually write that disclaimer, most people would assume that statement to be my assessment of work, for that is simply the norm. Serious, rational thought is well rewarded at work. Creative and playful ideas are often easily dismissed, and those who promote those ideas are rarely taken seriously. Sadly, this is the typical paradigm that we see in most work environments.

It’s ironic that we attribute that ”serious-professional mindset” with success, when some of the most amazing companies worldwide, like Google, Pixar, Facebook and Apple are well known for their very playful and rather zany work environments. Creativity and play are two of the most important processes for any work environment. If you want innovation, ingenuity and problem-solving that goes beyond the basics, then your workspace needs to reflect a more playful and creative environment. But don’t just take my word for it. I encourage you to watch the video below from the 2008 Serious Play conference, where designer Tim Brown talks about the powerful relationship between creative thinking and play.

In short, if you really want to take your job seriously, don’t be so serious. It’s true. I’m serious.
